PSAT vs. SAT vs. ACT
The Difference Between the PSAT-Related Assessments and the SAT: Purpose
Why Take the SAT?
Most colleges in the U.S.—including those that are test optional—accept SAT scores as part of the admissions process. Together with high school grades, the SAT can show your potential to succeed in college and careers. SAT scores are standardized, so they help colleges compare students from different high schools. Your scores show your strengths and readiness for college work. But remember, scores are just one part of your college application.
Although anyone can take the SAT, most students take it in 11th or 12th grade in preparation for college applications.
Why Take the PSAT/NMSQT?
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) isn’t a college entrance exam. Instead, it is used for test prep and to prepare students for the ACT or SAT, essentially giving them a chance to experience a similar test.T he PSAT/NMSQT is more than good practice for the SAT. If you’ve already taken the PSAT or PSAT, you’ll be able to track your improvement. With insights about your knowledge and skills, you can set your own target score for the SAT. And, based on your scores, you’ll get personalized recommendations about AP courses that are a good fit. What sets the PSAT/NMSQT apart from the rest of the tests in the SAT Suite of Assessments is that students who take it and meet other program entry requirements will enter the National Merit® Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
The PSAT/NMSQT is usually taken by 10th or 11th graders.
Why Take the ACT?
Similar to the SAT, The American College Testing (ACT) college readiness assessment is an entrance exam. Colleges and Universities review the test scores of students to determine if they have sufficient knowledge to do well in school.
Additionally, it serves as a comparison point between different applicants. Since the ACT is standardized, colleges can use it to see how students measure up against each other when deciding who to admit.
